My Make-Do for this week:

I wanted to make some "picture necklaces" for my 18month to 3 year old Nursery children who attend my Ward- Church.

So I had the resource page copied and then my kids and I cut them out and hole punched them.  We made 30 of them. It was taking quite a long time to collate them and line up the holes.
So I had to figure out a better way.

I had my Nursery binder open, (because that is where I keep some of my supplies, like the scissors, and some yarn as well as the lesson book and other resources), and I had a light-bulb moment.

The binder rings could be used to sort the cut-outs and line up the holes at the same time. I could sort 6 at a time and if I did one set of 6 and then sorted the next 6 upside down, I could get 12 on at the one time.

So I did that a couple of times.
It worked out beautifully!
.....

Then while the circles were on the ring,
I lined them up neatly.
.....

I carefully took each set off the ring.
.....

Then I laced the yarn through the punch hole.
....

Then pulled the yarn through and tied a knot.  Now the necklace was done.
.....
Then next thing was to put them orderly in the binder for safe journey to Sunday's classes.

So I slipped them into the binders pocket and where they could travel safely to class.

Done with 30 picture necklaces for my darling little kids attending church.

My Make-Do for this week:

(More from our July 1 to 6, 2010 TERT Weekend)

So I was reminded during our June TERT weekend this weekend that our floors in the trailer get quite cold when it is cold outside.  My feet were freezing in June.  I needed to protect our feet from the cold.

So I decided I needed to come up with some rugs, but rag rugs would cost me too much.  Even though they are quite cheap, anything that costs money it too much for me/us right now.

So it was time to innovate, recycle and create.

I had a bag of cloths that were heading to the second hand store- DI in our area.  I looked in the bag and found 7 t-shirts that were not in tip top condition.  I put them aside and looked for a large crochet hook.  Then I proceeded to tear the shirts and make strips.  I later found out that tearing was nice, but I often had strips that were of different widths.  Which is fine or not fine depending on the end results you are looking for.

I later decided to cut the strips and make more uniform pieces that kept the rug more consistent.  On this first rug, I used up every inch of the shirts that were usable, that left only the collars, buttons and button hole areas.  The first rug is the one at the top with the red in it and with the plastic bag on it.  This rug goes in the kitchen in front of the stove and up to the kitchen sink.  I made this rug in about 4 hours while listening to TV back in June.

The next three rugs were made in July at camp while relaxing in my reclining chair next to the fire pit.  My favorite spot in the camp ground.

This rug was the first I made at camp.  I put it in front of the refrigerator.  Now the kitchen walking areas are complete with rag rugs.  I am thinking about making one for under the dinette, but won't be doing that for a while.

This rug is just inside the door into the trailer.  We have had a piece of carpet there, oh look- you can see the carpet piece under the rug!  At camp I moved the carpet scrap to the outside at the bottom of the trailer steps.

The last rug is the bathroom rug.  I made it a little different.  First I went back and forth in rows and then I went around the outside until it was the size I needed.  I like this one best.  This photo is showing it weird, I didn't think that the bottom left corner was that distorted.  I think it needs to be pulled and stretched and it will be fine.

When I took the photo, I was in a hurry and it was hot and stuffy in the trailer.  We were having a 95 degree day and inside the trailer was much hotter.  I wanted out!

So I just snapped the photo and didn't bother to put the blanket and water bottle back in the tub.  We keep extra blankets in the tub.

We also keep extra water in the tub in bottles.  Some of this water is used to rinse the potty if the water pump is not turned on.  The switch for the pump is in the kitchen and sometimes we forget to turn it on before we use the potty and if we are alone, we don't have anyone to switch it on for us.

T-shirt rag rugs are great.  They are recycled.  Easy to construct.  Free- no cost.  Washable! just throw them in the washer.  A great Make-Do for sure!

Remember this notebook Make-Do?  It worked for a long time and then the duct tape started to get ratty and sticky.

Well.... It was getting too yucky for even a photo!  So I decided to make a quick no-sew make-do cover.

Using the hot glue gun was fun, it had been a while since I had used it. But I did not have my favorite gun, my favorite is a low temp melter, one I used to make this cover was a regular high temp melter.  My fingers got hot, too hot once too many times during this project.  In fact one of my puppies/fingers got a nice white blister.  So after putting my Vitamin E oil on it, the burn is just fine.

So................  Here is what I came up with:

I covered my notebook with old levi material.  Rugged, durable, soft and jeannie.  This is certainly not perfect, but for a few minutes of my time and hot fingers it made my sticky fronted notebook not sticky and the best part is the pockets, both front and back.  No more loosing pens!!!!

Here are the two pieces of back pockets from a pair of Hubby's old jeans.  I cut them about an inch larger than the cover on my notebook.

Then I folded the edge under and hot glued it. (The edge that will be next to the binding.)

Then I glued the pocket to the book cover along the folded under portion and then around the other 3 edges.

Then I folded each side over the cover to the backside and glued them down.  Taking care to make the corners as nice as I could, but still doing a quick job.  You can see that it is not perfect, but it is done.

If I ever get to the point to finish it, I will put a nicely hemmed square over the rough edges on the inside cover.  But I don't really think I will ever get to that point.

Now I have a pocket to keep my pen safe and sound and always available in my notebook.  I can also put my cell phone, I-Pod, papers, shopping lists, etc in them to keep them close.  This really works for me!

Here's what I did this last week:

I wanted to put a pen in my borrowed Pharmacy Jacket, but I did not have a pocket protector.

I was concerned that ink might leak out and make spots.  One of the lower jacket pockets is a spotted mess from a previous user, and I do not want to have the breast pocket have the same problem.

So as I was waiting for the next learning opportunity I thought of a solution.  A momentary solution.  That will probably last another month.

I took a sheet of waste paper and rolled it up into a tube and then folded the tube in half. I wrapped some clear tape around the tops of the tubes to keep the piece folded.  Now I had a bottom in the tube and two holes in the top.

The pen fits nicely in the tube and the tube sits nicely in the pocket and now I have no fears of ink leaking and ruining the jacket.

I can also use my decorative pen I made with the fun dangles I enjoy.  I did put some tape over the folded end to help liquid proof it.

Everything is going great with my Make-Do pocket protector.  I have not had any leaks or problems with writing in my (loaner) pocket.

What have you done this week?

Have a great time make-doing in your lives.  See you soon................

DIY - What I did this past week:

Happy Face to the Rescue!

I love my happy face beads.  They are cute, colorful and invite me to be happy.
(Situation)
I received my final text book for my last college class for my Pharmacy Technician Diploma.  This wonderful book is spiral bound, which is really a nice thing.

(Problem)
However, I have been running into problems with the top and bottom holes on my book pages coming off of the spiraling wire.  This is aggravating to me and so I had to fix the problem.

(Solution)
So I thought of my smiley faced beads.  I threaded them on the wire ends and to my elation, they fit really tight.  I doubt they will fall off, but as soon as I find some super glue (it always goes missing at my house) I will double secure the beads on the wire with the glue.

The beads are doing a wonderful job holding the pages on the wire, there is no way that they will come off now.  I love it!

Desired solution has been acquired!
No more pages escaping the wire binding!
I am not frustrated with my new book!

I am happy!
and we all know that if momma is happy, then the rest of the family, house, neighborhood, world can be happy as well!!

LOL.....................

Have a great week!  Stop by again next week and share your Make-Do's once again for us to enjoy.

You all know how I love things.  Things, all sorts of things.

So I have several containers for my bacon grease.  But I finally found the perfect container- it is the honey pot, with a hole or place for the spoon, knife or silicone brush.

So here is my latest jar:

It looks like it might be a jelly, or marmalade container as it is decorated with oranges.  I suppose it still could be a honey jar, but now it is my softened butter jar.  I usually leave my butter out, as we go thru it quick enough that even in the summer it does not go rancid.

I love using cute jars in my kitchen and I will be on the look out for more of these jars with spoon/ utensil holes.  That way I won't be finding knives and spoons laying on the counter or building up in the sink.  Works for me.

(I guess you can tell that I love butter- just look at me- I am a butterball mommy!!  I also keep my food storage close by.......... actually I only keep my personal food storage, it is stored in my fat cells!  I doubt I will ever starve to death.)
